Rate cap off. Illini ON.

The History

Illinois first deregulated electric utilities in 1997 by passing the Electric Service Customer Choice and Rate Relief Law of 1997. At the time, several Illinois communities were paying some of the highest electricity rates in the U.S. One of the best things to come out of the law was the 10-year rate freeze on residential rates. When the freeze cap came off, several new electricity companies entered the Illinois energy market.

The good news for you?

These companies will help keep rates low by naturally competing with one another for your business. But there's a catch: prices are volatile and can skyrocket just as quickly as they can fall, so you shouldn't base your choice on price alone.

The recommendation

Pick an electricity company that's offering a fixed rate. Our fixed rates will protect you (and your wallet) from any jumps in market electricity costs. If you sign up for a variable rate, what you'll pay per kilowatt hour could change every month. Choosing a fixed rate means you'll pay the exact same rate every month for the full length of your contract, no matter what the market price is.

Be sure to look for other added benefits before you sign a contract. We can offer you superior customer service, reliable electricity options,  and (best of all) give you a chance to give back to the University of Illinoiswithout changing a thing about your regular day-to-day.
